I hate Alltel

Normally, I try not to spew hatred in a general non-focused sense…but I truly hate the company Alltel on all levels.

In a business sense, I have to deal with their Yellow Page con men in the Alltel Publishing division. (Full disclosure::I’m not a huge fan of 99.9% of all Yellow Page publishers…but Alltel takes the cake for bad business practices.)

Today, I have general vitriol against them with my personal lines. I spent some time in Alltel’s “All of our customer service associates are busy” purgatory today. It turns out that Alltel charged some things on my bill that I’ve never subscribed to. They signed me up “for my convenience”. The “customer service” rep tells me that I did use these services that I’m not subscribed to. (how did that happen?) She won’t remove the charges and pretty much says I’m lying.

We also have a heated discussion about charging me for the privilege of having long distance service along with the toll charges I do make.

Here’s the best part…
At this point, I’m fairly irate on the phone…and she trys to upsell me additional services. Of course, this is not her idea…some marketing moron higher up is telling all these reps to ask “Would you like fries with that?”

This is akin to me finding a severed finger in my meal and the restaurant asking me if I would like to purchase dessert as well.

The traditional telephone business is dying everyday. It looks like Alltel would be looking for ways to IMPROVE the customer conversation…not make me mad.

But here’s the thing….This happens daily in thousands of other businesses. Some corporate schmuck is handing down “big ideas” to improve the bottom line. It sounds good in the boardroom. But when they execute the idea on the ground…it winds up ticking me off.

  1. More and more I am finding people mad about the same things with alltel. I am not ticked at them because of any additional charges. There are so many things I can say bad about them, but the one thing that bothers me the most right now, is their new plan to make, I repeat make all people who are trying to activate a smartphone pay more for less minutes with a smartphone package! What a rip off. then there’s the horrible customer service… Ah I get tense just thinking about all the crap they put me through. So I type in I hate alltel to find ones who can sympathize with me! Thanks for helping make my day!

  2. In most cases I just won’t put up with what comes across as strange form of corporate bullying. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s simply better to hang up and call back again to see if I can get a different customer service rep and sometimes wait ‘til a different time of day to get a different call center – it really can make all of the difference sometimes.

About 4 years ago I canceled my land line with Alltel after a rather stressful conversation with one of their customer service reps involving some reconnection fees they wanted me to pay before they would talk to me about anything else (I made the call on my cell phone.) I didn’t bother calling back, instead I decided it would be easier to use my cell phone for my primary phone since I was already using digital cable for internet plus I was using the cell phone a lot because there were no additional fees for long distance.

It’s worked out well, I don’t miss the land line at all. I’m definitely glad I haven’t had to deal with Alltel since. The cell phone was definitely the lesser of two evils.

I have had one nightmare-like encounter with the cell phone service that took a week to resolve but it was a really strange series of events. Now, since my signed contract has expired, they practically jump through hoops when I call because they’re afraid I’ll leave (and I no longer have the super cheap plan because I’m using it for business and have added an additional phone and line as well.)

  3. To comment on the Blog by Chris Houchens, he is exactly right. At Alltel Wireless it is the most anal set-up I have ever worked in my entire life thus far. They have actually told me my badge is on the wrong side of my shirt. No sweaters/jackets allowed on our chair or around desk areas, no hand sanitizer is to be near the desk (we are told we must meet and shake hands with every person at the door even though the lines go out the door and right to our desk), they have about three forms that are to be filled out for every transaction only to be filed away at the end of a day just in case they need an excuse to fire us. I’m really not being extreme or kidding in the least. Alltel has good plans and some good people but those on top are the most clueless, controlling freaks on earth. They recently came up with a new form which is the same as the old one but with a new look and they expect me to transfer all this months data from my old daily forms to the new ones and then file them away in case some inspector checks the store. Just in case! Just in case they didn’t turn on those spy cameras lately, the line starts 30 minutes before we open and ends an hour after we lock the door. ALL day! Maybe they can spy some time in between the line all day that I can get those forms detailed like they so anally want. I told some people we should start a union and my manager freaked out. Bad situation but for me it will be temporary (by my choice). Sorry to all you customers out there, I do the best I can with what they dictate from above. I tried to plea on one customers behalf regarding a particular issue and basically received a comment that this was not a merger it was a buyout. That basically meant that it is the Alltel way or the highway for both customer and employee. They actually said that in training regarding employee thoughts and opinions. If you meet some person from the executive or corporate level they are typically arrogant and cocky. I had the southern President come in the store on a surprise visit (before any real computer or plan conversion took place) he was the most arrogant person you could meet and he sent an email degrading the store and its performance though no real systems were in place for their processes. What president just goes around looking for something to belittle an individual store about that hasn’t even converted to his corporate structure yet? It is this way with almost every upper level person I’ve seen so far. To that president of the southern region, he can shove his opinions back where they came from and go get a degree in reality.

  4. I used to think some used car salesmen are the most dishonest business men. Since I made a stupid decision some six months ago to stay with Alltel wireless, I now place them into the same category. Our cell phones don’t work reliably, their customer service is incompetent and unresponsive. On top of everything after I mailed them a registered letter about service disconnection, they sent me a written reminder about my two-year contract and the $200 cancellation penalty. I hope all people, who even remotely considering to sign up with Alltel, will stay away from them. Any lost customer to Alltel is a gain for me! They don’t deserve any new business.

  5. Yes Alltel does suck. They are telling us that only 2 weeks can go by with a revolving balance. When the bill came I put some 80 dollars on the bill with some left over, according to Alltel that isn’t good enough, because they have a Big Complex about it. Then after it is done on the phone they say “Have a nice Day” Yeah I’ll have a nice day when I had to pay the bill UnExpectedly! I doubt It! Let’s Clap for the UnWounderful ALLTEL!!

  6. I hear that once again Alltel is going to screw their employees with a layoff. It may be a quiet one, but management has been very secretively working through who will stay and who will go for the last two weeks. I just think it SUCKS!!!!

  7. Damn where did all of these cry babies come from? Listen people it Corp America, all the companies have the same policies, Oh my bad that we saved you money f*ck me.Here Mr. Customer you did 289 text messages = $43.35. We went ahead and put a 5.99 messaging pack on to take of that overage. OMG we saved you money. You tell me another company that would do that. Tell me another company that would call you out of the blue to tell you that your paying to much for your usage tells go down to the next plan. You really don’t know how good you have it.A company gives you people on any other network even land-line to call on the largest network in the US , and you bad mouth. I have been wanting to say this for a while now “Go to another company no need for you bullshit and crying” There is no other company out there that does what Alltel does. Oh by the way if you know how to read look at the 2008 consumer reports in all markets that Alltel is in, they are #1 in customer service and performance. Get a life

  8. just went to alltel to file an insurance claim, they told me “they have no record of me having insurance on my phone”. When i bought my phone i specifically told that dip shit lady i needed insurance and i was told it was taken care of. But when I need to use the service that I PAY FOR, its no where to be found. Alltel is a JOKE.

  9. alltel is the worst company that I have ever had to deal with I tried to cancel web access it got taken off for 1 month and then put back on. I got text messages and phone calls to pay my bill a week before the due date. When my son was home on leave before he left for service in Japan he ran up my bill. I paid 1/2 right away, the day after the bill was due and they only got 1/2 of the total the phone never stopped ringing even though I talked to customer service (joke) and told them that I would pay the rest next month I had to come up with the money that week or have the service turned off, that on top of flying my son home for leave before his going to Japan. I’m glad that I switched service I l have great coverage and the customer service is much better. Of course I have to pay the entire month of service with alltel even though I was only on it for 1 week I’ll hold off as long as I can. Right now they are calling 6 times a day telling me that they are going to cancel my phone service if I don’t pay. Don’t they realize that it’s to late I’ve already made the switch? It would be very amusing to see how long I could go but I’m sure that they would go after my credit rating if they haven’t already, after all it has been 2 weeks.

  10. Wait until Verizon buys off Alltel lays off everyone in Arkansas and you are left with dealing with the North East attitude!!

  11. Verizon is going to lay off 95 plus % of the Arkansas work force by March of 09. Verizon has the force in place to do the functions. They do not want potential trouble makers (current alltel employees) to stay too long!!!

  12. Incident
I started service with Alltel on January 30th 2008 and canceled service on February 2nd, 2008. All equipment was returned to the Metro Center location in Phoenix on January 3rd, 2008. After calling Alltel to let them know that I had returned the equipment to the store, they informed me that I have an outstanding bill of $133.31 and that they do not pro-rate and all fees must be paid. I was taken aback by the raised hair on my head! I said I was only with Alltel for 3 days and made TWO phone calls within the My Circle calling plan (which are FREE) and simply started their service so I could tether my laptop to my phone, but the woman who sold me the phone and tethering kit did not realize that the phone she sold me was NOT able to tether. The tethering kit she sent me was for the same BRAND of phone but for a different model of phone. I told them I only made two calls on the My Circle plan and all they told me is they do not pro-rate and I owe all fees billed. I started the $59 a month plan, so I am very confused in how my bill reached $133.31 in 3 days. They could never explain this to me and when I would ask, they would simply tell me to hold and they would transfer me. I think they do this on purpose to make you give up after several transfers. Alltel is a BIG scam company and I have found MANY complaints online and new ones documented every time I check. This has now gone too far as my bill is up to $150 with interest reoccurring monthly. I have contacted an attorney which in turn sent them a letter demanding they clear all said charges. They never responded. I then sent a letter to the Attorney General and their response was I need to provide receipts for the equipment being dropped off at the said store and documentation of time of activation and termination. They will then re-evaluate and provide a resolution. I say… YAH RIGHT ALLTEL!! this is simply one of your tactics to delay the issue and run my charges up even higher. I am still waiting for the FCC\’s response to my complaint I submitted. I am also going to file complaints on every site possible! It really is sad to have to deal with such rip-off companies. They take advantage of the people and I\’m sure, end up winning in most cases and the people who can fight their way through and win… it\’s no big deal to Alltel because they already screwed MANY others and won.

    Damage Resulting
I am now being charged reoccurring interest every single month. They seem to have NO intention of resolving this manner in a fair way.

  13. I've got 2 lines on one account why should I have to pay extra for texting or net ie. 5.99 x2 ,7.99×2 and wow they have a real great one, unlimited text & internet for like $20.00 . oh did I forget thats $20.00 x2 sense I got only one account & 2 lines where I'm already paying like $9.95 for that added line .. Maybe I have been here with these guys to long……….. GIVE PEOPLE BETTER DEALS……

  14. Naive people. Alltel doesn’t do anything the other carrires dont do. Ask your local elecric company for a new refridge when you need one. You have been paying them right using thier electricity. Or go the grocery store and ask them for free groceries because u have been coming there for 10 yrs.

  15. Thieves! That’s what Alltel and other big companies are. And I’m not just talking the oh redundant “they charge too much, bla bla bla but I’m talking about the $1000 dollar security deposit I put down and have not received since my “service contract” has been up. Isn’t that grand theft larceny?

  17. Alltel is the worst service provider I’ve had the misfortune to endure. The HTC touch phone is unreliable, it freezes up at least twice a day, necessitating a soft reset. The phone won’t alert you if you have messages, and sometimes the messages take over 24 hours to come through.
I believe the thing I find most distasteful about Alltel is the attitude of the entire corporation, from the execs on down to the reps in the stores. They have no problem lying to your face. Wether it is from ignorance or evil I do not know, but each one assures you that this is the fix that will take care of whatever problem you might have. Needless to say, whatever fix they give you does NOT solve the problem. I’m going to the Apple IPhone.
